Vegetated facades, environmental saving

Vegetation in buildings and specifically in facades can have significant advantages in energy saving. This is shown by Gabriel Perez in his doctoral thesis, a collaboration between the UPC and the University of Lleida.

The vegetated facades have the highest potential as a passive system of energy saving in buildings, by the shadow effect produced by its ability to intercept radiation.

The author has taken into account that plants, when sweating, consume energy and generate what is called evaporative cooling in the closest space. This means that in the space between the façade and the vegetated wall of the building, it creates a microclimate that makes insulation functions.
