May 07, 2012
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) has just launched the UPC Private Cloud, based on the cloud computing model.
Powered by UPCnet, university's ICT service providers, this new service offers the possibility to contract virtual servers, which includes features and applications demanded to improve the university performance.
The service, based on open source solutions, has received support from several experts on cloud computing research, such as Jordi Torres, coordinator of the UPC group High Performance Computing. According to Prof. Torres, "bring servers together in the same space is a great way to make more efficient use of energy and make ICT more sustainable."
In addition, Jordi Berenguer, director of the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering– EETAC, "saving, efficiency and the quality service of UPC Private Cloud shows how the university applies its know know to reduce energy costs, take advantage of the existing communications network and keep innovating. "
