"The Future is Female" project

Mar 12, 2012

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.BarcelonaTech (UPC), the Catalan Women Institute, the Education Department and the Cornellà de Llobregat City Council have launched a project called "The Future is Female", where students from technical degrees and training cycles mentor or guide students from secondary school and vocational training.

The initiative is aimed at providing gender references that generate interest in technical studies such as physics, energy or environment, and thus increase the number of girls in these areas.

Currently, as part of a pilot project, five UPC undergraduates and five students from technical training cycles will mentor, each one, two girls from 4th ESO coming from five diferent schools in Cornellà de Llobregat.

In Catalonia, in the academic year 2009/10, 6.981 women and 16.077 men were enrolled in technical studies. The lack of women in this area represents a significant loss of female talent for the society and economic system. The lack of women in many related sectors, the lack of guidance from a gender perspective and the abandonment of the workplace to care for people, are among the causes of this phenomenon.
