What are Solar Ponds?
Jan 19, 2015
Solar ponds are an opportunity to switch from traditional energy sourcing to renewables.
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Techology have joined Solvay to revise solar ponds and make the idea a reality in Martorell and Granada.
Like any body of water, solar ponds absorb the heat of the sun… but more effectively. By harnessing its power, we can store it in the form of thermal energy and use it later.
While a solar pond was an idea that was extensively researched in the 1970s and 1980s, these saltwater ponds were never commercialized as a renewable technology.
