19 university teams from 12 different countries, are competing this month in the Solar Decathlon Europe to build the most efficient house powered by sun energy.
Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 is the international competition for sustainable solar houses, whose second edition is this year being held in Madrid from 14th to 30th September at the Villa Solar (Puerta del Angel concert site in Casa de Campo). For the two weeks of the competition, the Villa Solar will be open to the public free of charge and there are all kinds of activities organized for children, young people, university students, professionals and the general public.
Solar Decathlon Europe is organized by the Ministry of Public Works, Madrid City Council and the Madrid Polytechnic University (UPM) via its Higher Technical School of Arquitecture (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid). Its main sponsors are Schneider Electric and Kömmerling, & its official collaborators include AENA, ADIF, RENFE, INECO y FEVE. It is also supported by the US Departament of Energy and the IDAE.
UPC·BarcelonaTech is compiting this year with the e(co) project, a new sustainability and low-cost model that reaches a real equilibrium between the environment, the society and the economy.
