AQUA.abib, technology to desalinate sea water and treat wastewater based on solar energy

Feb 18, 2014

AQUA.abib water solutions S.L. is a technology based firm recently spun out from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) aimed at implementing innovative technology to distill sea water and treating wastewater from solar energy.

AQUA.abib, a spin-off recently set up with the support of the UPC's Innova Program and managed by Prof. Àngel Bosch i Bosch from the ESAB - Escola Superior d'Agricultura de Barcelona (Campus Baix Llobregat), is committed to implement a new engineering based on harnessing the energy of the sun to desalinate sea water and process wastewater for both, to obtain freshwater and to reduce the environmental impact of this waste.

The system, which is already patented, is meant for countries with good sunlight (such as Catalonia), achieving an energy saving of 80% approx., compared to current processes. And because the energy comes from the sun, it requires less than the 20% of the energy used today in other technologies for similar purposes.

AQUA.abib is one of the projects awarded by KIC InnoEnergy.
