In this seminar the physics of solar ponds as solar energy collectors will be presented and the general characteristics discussed. A brief history of the development of solar ponds and their different applications in different parts of the world will be described. Through examples the seminar will provide an explanation of how solar ponds are constructed and how the salinary profile is established. Basic methods of maintenance of solar ponds will be presented along with information on how to estimate the yield of a solar pond in different locations and for various applications. In particular the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the Solvay Granada (Ezuka) Solar Pond will be illustrated. The prospects of this first European Industrial Solar Pond as a fuel saver will be discussed and the economics explained.
