UPC ranks the 1st position in Spain and the 4th in Europe in Webometrics
Feb 09, 2012
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) keeps the 1st position in Catalunya and reaches the 1st position in Spain and the 4th in Europe according to the world university ranking produced by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).
The Webometric Ranking of World Universities is produced by the CSIC and ranks universities and other educational institutions around the world in terms of volume, visibility and impact of their websites, with an emphasis on contents related to scientific production.
The evolution of the UPC website position in the three previous editions was:
Catalan scope: position 1 (January 2011), 1 (June 2011) and 1 (January 2012)
Statewide: position 5 (January 2011), 3 (June 2011), and 1 (January 2012)
European scope: position 75 (January 2011), 32 (June 2011) and 4 (January 2012)
Global: position 232 (January 2011), 145 (June 2011) and 41 (January 2012)
The results are obtained by combining these 4 factors:
The new system penalizes more strongly certain web domain naming practices like using several central domains, sharing domains with other organizations (helsinki.fi, wroc.ol, kiev.ua) or recent name changes. Webometrics discourages to use alternative domains for the international oriented web sites or for the contents in foreign languages.
To produce this ranking, it has been analyzed a set of 20,372 sites of universities and other institutions with global reach and every six months.

The results are obtained by combining these 4 factors:
- Visibility: resulting from the combination of links to other web sites that reference the UPC and the entries in reference websites such as Wikipedia or Universia.
- Size of the site (for this calculation is very important labeling and no broken links)
- Number of file types: pdf, doc & docx, pptx and ppt + ps ..
- Number of scientific articles
