UPC is top university in winning patents in Spain
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) between 2002-2010 was awarded the most national patents of any university, according to the IUNE Observatory.
Between 2002 and 2010, the UPC received 212 patents for discoveries made by its researchers (from 8 in 2002 to 43 in 2011). Among spanish universities, UPC was followed by Universidad del País Vasco / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU) with 189 patents, and the Universitat Politècnica de Madrid (UPM) with 143 patents.
The innovative capacity of the university is also reflected in the number of spin-offs created in recent years. With a total of 57 spin-offs, UPC ranks the second position as the most active university in this respect, only behind the UAM (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid).
Another indicator of technology transfer is the revenue from R&D contracts and consulting activities. According to the report produced by the IUNE Observatory, UPC turnover was 139.87 million €, a figure surpassed only by the UPM.
Finally, the report also shows the great interest of UPC researchers in European projects. Between 2002 and 2010, the university participated in 224 projects from EU's Framework Programme calls, a figure exceeded only by UPM.
